SJC Airport Overview

Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) is the primary airport serving Silicon Valley and the South Bay. Named after former US Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, the airport handles the business travel demand of one of the wealthiest and most productive regions in the world. Southwest Airlines accounts for nearly 50 percent of departures, with 116 peak daily Southwest flights, but all major US carriers operate here alongside international services to Europe and Asia.

SJC is notably well-connected for business travelers: the Wi-Fi averages 200 Mbps, power outlets line most gates, and the airport has paid lounges in Terminal A. The airport is approximately 3 miles north of downtown San Jose and 50 miles south of San Francisco.

Terminal Layout

Terminal A (Gates 1-16)

Terminal A is at the north end of the airport and handles both domestic and international flights. Critically, all international arrivals are processed through Terminal A regardless of which terminal they departed from. Gates are numbered 1 through 7, 7A, and 8 through 16. The Club at SJC pay-per-use lounge operates in Terminal A and is one of the better airport lounge options at a mid-size US airport.

Terminal B (Gates B17-B35)

Terminal B is at the south end and handles domestic and international departures. 19 gates numbered B17 through B35. After clearing security, passengers enter a departure concourse. Terminal B houses most of the Southwest Airlines gates and other domestic carriers.

SJC is served by Southwest Airlines (largest carrier), Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue, Frontier, and Spirit. International carriers include British Airways, ANA (All Nippon Airways), ZIPAIR (Japan), and Volaris (Mexico). Getting To and From SJC

VTA Light Rail

The VTA (Valley Transportation Authority) light rail connects SJC to downtown San Jose and the broader South Bay. The Airport People Mover connects both terminals to the Metro/Airport light rail station. From downtown San Jose, you can connect to Caltrain for service to San Francisco and Peninsula cities. This is a genuinely useful connection for travelers going to downtown San Jose or connecting onward by Caltrain.

Rideshare and Taxi

Uber and Lyft pick up at designated zones outside both terminals. Downtown San Jose is 5 to 10 minutes and $10 to $20. Cupertino (Apple headquarters area) is 15 to 20 minutes and $20 to $30. Mountain View (Google area) is 15 to 20 minutes and $20 to $30. Palo Alto (Stanford, numerous tech companies) is 20 to 25 minutes and $25 to $40. San Francisco via US-101 is 45 to 60 minutes and $60 to $90.

Rental Cars

All major rental car brands operate at SJC. The rental car facility is accessible from both terminals. A rental car is useful for reaching outlying tech campuses in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and San Mateo that are not easily accessible by transit.

Parking

SJC has terminal garages and economy lots. Daily garage rates run $22 to $28. Economy lots are around $12 to $15 per day. San Jose parking is generally cheaper than SFO but comparable to OAK.

Lounges

• The Club at SJC (Terminal A) — Pay-per-use lounge open to any passenger. Two locations in Terminal A. Offers showers, a food buffet, cocktails, and comfortable seating. Day passes available at the door or in advance. A strong option at an airport that lacks traditional airline clubs.

• Know your terminal for international arrivals. All international arrivals are processed in Terminal A regardless of departure terminal. If someone is meeting you after an international flight, they should wait for you at Terminal A baggage claim.
• SJC for Silicon Valley business travel. SJC is dramatically more convenient than SFO for tech campus destinations in San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and Mountain View. The traffic difference can be substantial.
• The 200 Mbps Wi-Fi is real. If you need to work in the airport, SJC is one of the best airports in the US for productivity. The connection is fast and reliable at virtually every gate.
• British Airways flies to London. SJC has a direct BA flight to London Heathrow, which is excellent for Valley business travelers who need to connect to Europe without routing through SFO.
• ANA and ZIPAIR for Japan. Silicon Valley's deep Japan ties mean two Japanese carriers serve SJC directly. These are strong options for tech business travel to Tokyo.

Nearby Hotels

The Marriott San Jose and the Westin San Jose are in downtown San Jose, about 10 to 15 minutes from the airport. The Hilton San Jose and the DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose are similarly close. For on-airport convenience, the Hyatt Place San Jose Downtown is a short rideshare from both terminals.
